These last few months haven’t been easy for anyone in Tassie that’s in the livestock game. But the good news is that the local government is recognising that fact and putting supports in place to help local farmers.
There are a number of packages available in this article we will focus on the King and Flinders Island Farm Water Infrastructure Rebate Scheme.
This is a great little scheme that’s designed to give a helping hand with the repair/upgrade or purchase and installation of new on farm water infrastructure. And the aim behind the scheme is to help future proof the Island with reliable water to improve animal welfare and drought resilience.
What is it for?
The Rebate Scheme offers financial assistance to eligible farm businesses looking to invest in new or upgraded water infrastructure. This can include things like installing new poly pipes for irrigation, upgrading water storage systems, or even improving the overall water management on your farm.
Who Can Apply?
If you’re running a farm on King or Flinders Island and the project is for livestock water you will most likely be eligible for this rebate. The scheme is aimed at improving animal welfare so it's not available for irrigation or farms that aren’t in livestock. There is however, an option for properties who don’t meet the criteria to submit their application for special consideration.
To be eligible for the rebate you will need to make sure that the project is completed after 1 January 2024.
How Much Can You Get?
The Scheme provides a one off 25% rebate up to $15,000 (GST Exclusive) to eligible primary producers for the costs associated with the purchase and installation of eligible on farm water infrastructure and/or repairs.
An additional $2,500 (GST Exclusive) Rebate is available to primary producers who can provide evidence of an existing drought risk management plan or completed Farm Business Resilience (FBR) Plan.
The FBR program is delivered by either DairyTAS or RMCG.
Why It Matters
This year hasn’t been easy and spending money to future proof the island will hopefully ease the impact of drought weather in the future.
Whilst it can seem like a lot of money to outlay especially if conditions aren’t good and times are tough. Water is an investment that pays back in spades over the future years.
How to Apply
To apply for the Scheme you will need to log onto the governments grant management system and submit an application. Some of the things you will need to be prepared to include are:
- Your details including PID & PIC numbers
- Details of farm ownership & leases
- Details relating to your water infrastructure & expenses
- Timesheets & other evidence such as Tax Invoices
Next Steps
We recommend taking a look at what infrastructure you need on the property. Rate it in order of importance what is going to deliver the most impact for animal welfare. Look at financing options available or cash flow to budget for the expense. Get quotes from a couple of suppliers remember the cheapest may not always be the most long lasting or best solution. Ask mates or family for their opinions on suppliers & contractors.
Once you’ve made your decision have all the paperwork ready and lodge your application.
